{"id":11081,"date":"2014-05-16T07:51:34","date_gmt":"2014-05-16T13:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=11081"},"modified":"2014-05-16T07:51:34","modified_gmt":"2014-05-16T13:51:34","slug":"no-grave-duty-for-living-dead-fans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=11081","title":{"rendered":"No Grave Duty For Living Dead Fans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A member of the cemetery committee told borough council last week that followers of a \u201ccult, B movie\u201d should not be allowed to desecrate the sanctity of the final resting place of deceased residents.<br \/>\n<span class=\"z\">John West told the council that the cemetery, which was founded in the early 1800s, should be respected as a place where families can go to remember their loved ones in a peaceful setting.<\/span><span class=\"z\">West said the Evans City Cemetery Authority opposes any activity by \u201cNight of the Living Dead\u201d fans that would violate the sanctity of the cemetery, which is off Franklin Road southwest of the borough. <\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"z\">The cemetery is featured in the opening scene of \u201cNight of the Living Dead,\u201d a movie that was produced in 1968 by George Romero and shot in and around the borough.<\/span><span class=\"z\">The cemetery houses a small two-story chapel that is the only physical item remaining from the movie. Many fans of the movie, which has developed a cult following over the years, visit the cemetery. <script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/span><span class=\"z\">Gary Streiner, the movie\u2019s sound engineer, has organized a handful of successful Living Dead festivals since 2008. He defended the fans of the movie, which introduced undead ghouls, now known as zombies, to American film and television. <\/span><span class=\"z\">\u201cI wish you could take the horror out of the equation because these are some of the genuinely most wonderful people you would ever want to meet,\u201d Streiner told council after West spoke. \u201cNobody wants to desecrate anything.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"z\">Council President Lee Dyer said a committee comprised of two council members, Streiner and Kevin Kreiss, who owns the Night of the Living Dead Museum on Main Street, plus a representative from the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau should be formed to plan an event for the summer. <\/span><span class=\"z\">Jack Cohen, president of the tourism bureau, said last month that the bureau would like to help promote Evans City as the home of the \u201cNight of the Living Dead.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"z\">But when Cohen mentioned the possibility of taking buses of festivalgoers to the cemetery, the cemetery committee hit the brakes.\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"z\">Ron Volz, president of the cemetery committee, said on Monday that the seven-person board does not want buses of revelers, fans dressed as ghouls, ghoul-themed weddings, or a movie-themed gift shop at the cemetery. <\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"z\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that we don\u2019t want (the notoriety from the movie,)\u201d Volz said. \u201cWe want to control it. We don\u2019t want (the cemetery) turned into a circus.\u201d <\/span><span class=\"z\">Dyer said any upcoming \u201cNight of the Living Dead\u201d festival should be carefully planned to determine the best way to honor the movie\u2019s heritage while respecting the cemetery.\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"z\">\u201cWe need to walk before we try to run,\u201d Dyer said. <\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"z\">No action was taken by the council last week.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A member of the cemetery committee told borough council last week that followers of a \u201ccult, B movie\u201d should not be allowed to desecrate the sanctity of the final resting place of deceased residents.
