{"id":11340,"date":"2014-06-10T09:45:09","date_gmt":"2014-06-10T15:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=11340"},"modified":"2014-06-10T09:45:09","modified_gmt":"2014-06-10T15:45:09","slug":"queen-of-outer-space-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=11340","title":{"rendered":"Queen Of Outer Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not all black &amp; white \u201cnoir\u201d and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00F98FOI6\/pjmedia-20\"><strong>Criterion Collection classics<\/strong><\/a> over at TCM.<\/p>\n<p>The channel also airs weird, obscure (or not) \u201cunderground\u201d films and B-movies that are often (mis)categorized as \u201ccult\u201d flicks.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight (and into this morning) TCM is showing movies all about space, \u201cthe final frontier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with predictable choices like <em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em> and <em>Alien<\/em>, they\u2019re playing that fondly remembered 1950s \u201csci-fi\u201d quickie, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tcm.com\/this-month\/article\/1003440%7C0\/Cult-Movie-Picks-in-June.html\"><strong><em>Queen of Outer Space<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the film\u2019s own publicity materials, Zsa Zsa Gabor is not the titular \u201cqueen.\u201d Instead, that much-married Hungarian beauty queen\/Paris Hilton relation leads the resistance fighters who want to overthrow Venus\u2019s ruler. (Whose mask looks like an aborted kindergarten project.)<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, life on this all-woman planet gets complicated following the arrival of three very male American astronauts: Oscar-Levant-Looking-Guy, Paul Rudd\u2019s dad, and Eisenhower-era Matthew McConaughey. (It may be \u201cthe future,\u201d but they\u2019re still using Brylcreme, and lots of it.)<\/p>\n<p><em>Queen of Outer Space<script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/em> could have been a cute Shavian satire on male\/female relationships. Instead, it\u2019s simply a colorful, confused but ultimately painless time-waster.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smalldeadanimals.com\/archives\/019428.html\"><strong>Blogger Kate McMillan<\/strong><\/a> likes to say that \u201cif women ran the world, we\u2019d still be living in caves, but with really, really fancy curtains.\u201d Alas, according to <em>Queen of Outer Space<\/em>, the women who run another planet can\u2019t even manage that. Astonishingly cheap sets that would have looked passable in black &amp; white are rendered nakedly, comically putrid beneath the relentless gaze of CinemaScope Color.<\/p>\n<p>(And sure enough, the women\u2019s super-duper nuclear death ray is decorated with yellow polka-dots.)<\/p>\n<p>Along with the awful set design, genre fans treasure the \u201cgiant spider\u201d that\u2019s the size of a kiddie pool (and slightly less menacing) and, especially, the racy costumes worn by what looks to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0062085557\/pjmedia-20\"><strong>Sylvia Plath and her fellow <em>Mademoiselle<\/em> interns.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s Zsa Zsa, throwing awkward \u201csexy\u201d shapes and breathlessly warning the astronauts that the Queen possesses \u201cweaponsh made by her schientishtshs that can deshtroy da Earthsht.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So set your PVR and, when you\u2019re ready to watch, wear your drinking pants.<\/p>\n<p>Or purchase <em>Queen of Outer Space<\/em> on DVD and enjoy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000OHZJGO\/pjmedia-20\"><strong>the charming audio commentary<\/strong> <\/a>by the \u201cQueen\u201d herself, B-movie regular Laurie Mitchell.<\/p>\n<div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s not all black &amp; white \u201cnoir\u201d and Criterion Collection classics over at TCM.
