Twickenham Film Studios, the venerable British studio founded in 1913 and used for the Beatles\u2019s \u201cHard Day\u2019s Night\u201d and \u201cHelp!,\u201d among other classic films, is set to close by June because of financial troubles.<\/p>\n

Gerald Krasner, the administrator handling the closing, told The Telegraph that the studio had lost money over the past three years and that all 17 employees would be laid off within the next six months. \u201cIt will not be retained as a film studio, because there is no way of making it pay as a film studio,\u201d Mr. Krasner said.

Built on the site of a former ice rink, Twickenham was the largest studio in Britain at its founding. The first movie filmed there was \u201cThe House of Temperley,\u201d a silent film based on a novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Over the years, it was used for such box-office and critical hits as \u201cAlfie,\u201d \u201cRepulsion,\u201d \u201cBlade Runner,\u201d \u201cReds,\u201d \u201cSuperman,\u201d and \u201cA Fish Called Wanda.\u201d Twickenham is also well-represented among the current crop of Oscar-nominated films. \u201cWar Horse\u201d was partly filmed there, and it was also used on post-production for \u201cThe Iron Lady.\u201d The studio even got its own close-up in \u201cMy Week With Marilyn,\u201d which included scenes filmed in its old viewing theater and wardrobe department.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking at Twickenham, you felt as if you were truly part of film history,\u201d the production designer Joseph Bennett, who created the sets for Michael Winterbottom\u2019s \u201cJude\u201d at the studio, told The Telegraph. \u201cIt had an extraordinary atmosphere, so much more intimate than some of the larger, more corporate modern studios.\u201d
