Here is a brief but illuminating Q&amp;A with this genre giant:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span><em>Will the Thrill:<\/em> Any standout memory or lasting impression of working with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Al_Adamson\">Al Adamson<\/a>?<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span> <em>GC:<\/em> <span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\">I was a struggling young actor when I first met Al Adamson.<span> <\/span>He was the first director I ever came into contact with.<span> <\/span>We met through a mutual friend.<span> <\/span>I became his assistant (a glorified gofer) on a film that eventually became <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0065826\/\"><em>Hell\u2019s Bloody Devils<\/em><\/a>.<span> <\/span>After that film, Al mentioned he had a treatment on a western he wanted to make.<span> <\/span>I volunteered to write the screenplay.<span> <\/span>When I told him I\u2019d do it for no fee he said to go ahead and give it a try.<span> <\/span>I\u2019d only read one script and had no idea where to begin.<span> <\/span>Somehow, a few months later we were sitting in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001791\/\">Robert Taylor\u2019s<\/a> Malibu mansion offering him the lead role.<span> <\/span>He agreed and ABC television gave us the go ahead for one of the first made for TV movies.<span> <\/span>I\u2019d written a good role for myself and felt I was on my way.<span> <\/span>Robert Taylor suddenly died and the project was shelved.<span> <\/span>Al raised $50,000 for a low budget movie, but had no idea what to make.\u00a0<span> <\/span>I again volunteered to write something that could be done on that budget and came up with the idea and screenplay for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0064939\/\"><em>Satan\u2019s Sadists<\/em><\/a>.<span> <\/span>We made the picture near Palm Springs, CA in the fall of 1968.<span> <\/span>It was a wonderful experience for me.<span> <\/span>Al was not the most prepared director to ever stand next to a camera, but he was open to ideas and I constantly pestered him and the rest of the cast with \u201csuggestions\u201d &#8211; some taken\u2026 most not.<span> <\/span>That was really the first film I worked on from conception to completion.<span> <\/span>I sat with Gary Graver who was editing and learned a great deal from him.<span> <\/span>Within a year I was directing my own.<span> <\/span>I\u2019ve been very lucky throughout my career and I owe a great deal to Al Adamson and all those who allowed me to peer over their shoulder and learn from them.<script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-63\" title=\"satans2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/satans2-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"satans2\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/satans2-197x300.jpg 197w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/satans2.jpg 349w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <em>Thrill:<\/em><span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\"> Favorite of your films as director?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <em>GC:<\/em> <span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\">Impossible to choose.<span> <\/span>If you pushed me\u2026 I\u2019d say, \u201cThe next one.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <em>Thrill:<\/em><span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\"> Favorite of your films as actor?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <em>GC:<\/em> <span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\">See above.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <em>Thrill: <\/em><span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\">Any particular standout memory of making <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0076665\/\">Satan&#8217;s Cheerleaders<\/a><\/em>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>I\u2019d had some success with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0074214\/\"><em>Black Shampoo<\/em><\/a>.<span> <\/span>I\u2019ve always defined a picture as successful if it made enough money to allow me to keep making pictures.<span> <\/span>I didn\u2019t want to make another Blaxsploitation film.\u00a0<span> <\/span>At the time cheerleader films were doing well and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0070047\/\"><em>The Exorcist<\/em><\/a> was a huge hit.<span> <\/span>I thought about combining the two.<span> <\/span>I\u2019ve always like comedies and no matter what the film I\u2019d add as much humor as possible.<span> <\/span>I came up with the title, <em>Satan\u2019s Cheerleaders<\/em> \u2013 now that\u2019s a comedy I could get excited about.<span> <\/span>Al Fast and I wrote the screenplay and plowed forward with the production.\u00a0<span> <\/span>I realized that I\u2019d end up with less than experienced actors for the cheerleaders and wanted the others to be as experienced as possible.\u00a0<span> <\/span>I\u2019d directed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0712731\/\">Aldo Ray<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0537146\/\">Jock Mahoney<\/a> in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0130488\/\"><em>The Bad Bunch<\/em><\/a> and they were great to work with. I was able to put together a group of name actor\u2019s to support the younger cheerleaders.<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0170578\/\">Jacqeuline Cole<\/a> \u2013 we met on <em>Satan\u2019s Sadists<\/em> and stayed together for 35 years \u2013 was available for the cheerleader\u2019s teacher and production began.\u00a0<span> <\/span>The budget on all my films was always a problem and the shooting schedule became a major obstacle.<span> <\/span>We had two weeks to make the film.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-154\" title=\"blackshampoo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackshampoo-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"blackshampoo\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackshampoo-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/blackshampoo.jpg 472w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span> <em>GC: <\/em><span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\">What got you interested in this business, and why &#8220;grindhouse\/drive-in&#8221; cinema? Are you a fan of this genre, or was it just the most expedient career path?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>I came from a small town in the Michigan and didn\u2019t know anyone west of the Mississippi.<span> <\/span>I wanted to be a film actor and, after dropping out of college, headed to Los Angeles.<span> <\/span>It was two full years of selling crap door to door to pay the rent before I met Al Adamson.<span> <\/span>He was trying to make main stream films, but having little luck.<span> <\/span>When we made <em>Satan\u2019s Sadists <\/em>and it became a huge \u201cgrindhouse\u201d hit I think the dye was cast for both of us.<span> <\/span>In those days if a producer could somehow come up with a few bucks and make his movie,\u00a0<span> <\/span>he could get it played in theatres.<span> <\/span>These theatres were not the main stream type, but drive-in and grindhouse theatres that\u00a0would play exploitation films.<span> <\/span>The major studios were not making these types of films (they are today).<span> <\/span>This left a market for the independent film maker.<span> <\/span>If you had a good title, good ads, and the picture delivered you could play the drive-in \u2013 grindhouse circuit and get your money back and show a decent profit.<span> <\/span>If the picture really hit \u2013 like <em>Satan\u2019s Sadists <\/em>you could make a career.<span> <\/span>That\u2019s what happened to Al Adamson.<span> <\/span>I was lucky enough to have a long career directing many genres &#8211; some better than others, but I\u2019m proud of them all.\u00a0<span> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span> <em>Thrill:<\/em> <span style=\"-webkit-text-stroke-width: -1;\">What are you working on now?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span><em>GC: <\/em>I\u2019m putting together a remake of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0081764\/\">Without Warning<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62\" title=\"without_warning_1980_movie_poster\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/without_warning_1980_movie_poster-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"without_warning_1980_movie_poster\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/without_warning_1980_movie_poster-198x300.jpg 198w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/without_warning_1980_movie_poster.jpg 383w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GREYDON CLARK is a renaissance man of B movie cinema &#8211; actor\/writer\/producer &amp; more over four decades of delectable decadence (and counting).
