\nRoger Corman, the king of B movies, is living proof of P.T. Barnum\u2019s observation that nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. But the iconic low-budget legend says he\u2019s tried!<\/p>\n

The producer of cinematic popcorn such as \u201cDinocroc vs. Supergator,\u201d \u201cCamel Spiders,\u201d \u201cSorority House Massacre\u201d and \u201cAttack of the 50ft Cheerleader,\u201d Corman said that when the SyFy channel came to him a few years back and asked him to make \u201cSharktopus,\u201d he said no.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey asked why not and I told them my theory, which was, you can go up to a certain level of insanity with these titles and the audience is with you, but you go over what you might call the acceptable level of insanity and the audience turns against you and in my opinion, \u2018Sharktopus\u2019 is above the acceptable level of insanity,\u201d Corman told the Track.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Corman relented and, of course, \u201cSharktopus\u201d became the highest-rated program of the year for the SyFy channel.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I figured, OK, the acceptable level of insanity is much higher than I ever thought!\u201d<\/p>\n

At which point, Corman and his staff brainstormed a whole day to come up with \u201cthe most insane title we could think of\u201d and the result was \u201cPiranhaconda,\u201d which debuted on the cable channel Saturday night. It\u2019s the tale of a half piranha, half anaconda that attacks a movie crew when her egg is stolen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s to my advantage if it gets a big rating … but personally, I would not feel aggrieved if it didn\u2019t, because I could put all of this stuff behind me and go back to real films,\u201d Corman laughed.<\/p>\n

The prolific 82-year-old filmmaker was in Provincetown over the weekend to accept the Filmmaker on the Edge Award from the Provincetown International Film Festival in recognition of his 57-year career and his hundreds of films.<\/p>\n

Also grabbing kudos at the annual flick fest was indie-movie queen Parker Posey and \u201cThis Film is Not Yet Rated\u201d documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick.<\/p>\n

\u201cP-town is pretty great,\u201d Posey told us. \u201cIt\u2019s like \u2018Fantasy Island\u2019 meets \u2018Tales of the City.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Posey, who had guest-starring stints in the CBS hit \u201cThe Good Wife,\u201d and Showtime\u2019s \u201cThe Big C\u201d this past season, picked up the Excellence in Acting Award in recognition of her work in dozens of indie films such as \u201cAdam and Steve\u201d and \u201cThe House of Yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve walked up and down the streets and talked to people and felt so supported,\u201d she said. \u201cThere have been lots of cultural conversations with nice people, I love the gay community, and I\u2019ve had a chance to spend some time with all of these people that I\u2019ve known for years, so it\u2019s been great.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film fest wrapped up last night.<\/p>\n
