SHOUT! SCREAM!<\/a><\/em>, playing in select theaters starting April 10 from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monogramreleasing.com\">Monogram Releasing.<\/a> This fun, freaky flick is a perfect recreation\/re-realization (but not &#8220;re-imagining&#8221;) of an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_International_Pictures\">AIP<\/a> bikini-boppin&#8217; beast-on-the-beach drive-in rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll classic (read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=184\">Will the Thrill&#8217;s review<\/a>.) The multi-talented Mr. Edwards laid some of that smooth Southern charm on us recently:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thrillville.net\">Will the Thrill<\/a><\/em><\/span><span>:\u00a0You obviously adore genre movies from the 50s and 60s (as do many, but not enough, of us). How were you exposed to these old films?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><em>JWE:<\/em><\/span><span> I watched A LOT of TV as a kid in Bradenton, Florida. \u00a0Instead of going out to play in the summer, I&#8217;d watch sitcom reruns, especially T<em>he\u00a0Dick Van Dyke Show.<\/em> Every Saturday afternoon however, I&#8217;d watch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/TelevisionCity\/3257\/drpaulbearer.html\">Dr. Paul Bearer<\/a> on WTOG&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creature_Feature_(WTOG)\">Creature Feature<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0He was a fantastic horror host, specializing in great\/terrible puns and fake product placement (&#8220;Bleeder&#8217;s Digest&#8221;), along with a double-feature of &#8220;horrible old movies&#8221; as he always described them. \u00a0That&#8217;s where I got hooked, but I&#8217;m still watching. \u00a0I watched <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Land_Unknown\">The Land Unknown <\/a><\/em>(1957) this afternoon&#8211; dinosaurs vs. the navy inside a volcano, shot in CinemaScope! \u00a0Completely ridiculous, but awesome at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <span><em>Thrill: <\/em><\/span><span>Were there any particular films that influenced <em>Stomp! Shout! Scream!<\/em> and you as a filmmaker in general?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span> <span><em>JWE<\/em><\/span><span>: I aspired to write a script as good as the &#8217;50s &amp; &#8217;60s monster movies that transcended the genre, like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creature_from_the_black_lagoon\">Creature from the Black Lagoon<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forbidden_Planet\">Forbidden<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forbidden_Planet\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forbidden_Planet\">Planet<\/a>,<\/em> and all the<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monstertrilogy.com\"><span><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-339 alignright\" title=\"itconquered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/itconquered.jpg\" alt=\"itconquered\" width=\"255\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/itconquered.jpg 255w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/itconquered-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universal_monsters\">Universal monster movies<\/a>. \u00a0My favorite of the rest of those films is Roger Corman&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/It_Conquered_The_World\">It Conquered the World<\/a><\/em> (1956) with Lee Van Cleef and Peter Graves. \u00a0There&#8217;s certainly some Peter Graves in Jonathan Green&#8217;s performance as the scientist in <em>S<\/em><em>tomp! Shout! Scream!<\/em> What really got me thinking about writing a &#8217;50s monster movie was seeing <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Them!\">Them!<\/a><\/em> (1954) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starlightdrivein.com\/\">Starlight Drive-in<\/a>, here in Atlanta. \u00a0That is such a good script, really well paced, and before you know it, you&#8217;re totally sucked into a ridiculous giant ant movie. \u00a0Plus, these monster movies all have a naive morality that&#8217;s really refreshing in a world so full of cynicism. \u00a0The triumphant hero always delivers a speech at the end of the film, &#8220;We dodged a bullet this time, but when&#8230; when will man le<\/span><\/span><span><span>arn the evils of atomic power\/greed\/etc?&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span><span><em>&#8220;Control the young mind of Jay Wade Edwards&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>About the same time, I <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monstertrilogy.com\"><\/a><span>also was watching every &#8217;60s rock and roll movie I could find, including all the beach party films, mainly because I&#8217;m a garage rock addict. \u00a0I just love that period of the &#8217;60s&#8211; after <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twist_(dance)\">the Twist <\/a>hit big, when garage bands figured out how to play noisy, distorted guitar licks, but before things like psychedelia, Vietnam and Watergate ruined the innocence of it all. \u00a0I combined all the things I loved about those genre movies, but tried to do it with a characters an audience would care about and a story that speeds right along.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span><em>Thrill<\/em><\/span><span>: The music, fashions, cinematography and even the dialogue in <em>Stomp!<\/em> effectively recreate the era of the mid-1960s with affectionate authenticity. How difficult was it to pull off a homage without slipping into satire, especially of such an inherently silly genre?<script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <span><em>JWE<\/em><\/span><span>: I made <a href=\"http:\/\/www.monstertrilogy.com\">3 short mo<\/a><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monstertrilogy.com\"><\/a><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monstertrilogy.com\">nster movies<\/a> before attempting <em>Stomp! Shout! Scream! <\/em>and learned pretty quickly that parody only lasts about as long as a good <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbc.com\/Saturday_Night_Live\/\">Saturday Night Live<\/a><\/em> sketch. \u00a0It&#8217;s virtually impossible to sustain parody for an entire feature. \u00a0So I set out to make a beach party rock and roll monster movie, but a really good one. \u00a0My goal was to make an endlessly fun and entertaining movie, but not at the expense of crafting something that looked, sounded and felt completely authentic. \u00a0That&#8217;s why we shot on 35 mm film, used <\/span><\/span><span><span>practical locations, and actual vintage costuming. \u00a0We set out to make this film just like they would have in 1966. \u00a0The cast of mostly-Atlanta actors also deserves a lot of the credit. \u00a0They all got what I was going for and nailed it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>I should mention <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=168\">the soundtrack<\/a>, too. \u00a0It&#8217;s a whose-who of garage rock with original songs by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catfightband.com\/frame_index.html\">Catfight!<\/a> performed by the actresses playing the band in the movie. \u00a0The Woggles, The Penetrators, The Hate Bombs, The Evidents, The Vendettas, The Clutters, Johnny Knox, Tiger! Tiger, and The Fleshtones all contributed songs that add to really selling the time period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <span><em>Thrill:<\/em><\/span><span> What was the inspiration for the &#8220;Skunk Ape&#8221; as opposed to the standard aquatic fish monster? (Extra gorilla costume lying around&#8230;?)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><span><em>JWE:<\/em><\/span><span> Growing up i<\/span><\/span><span><span>n Florida, I heard the legend of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.floridaskunkape.com\/\">Florida Skunk Ape <\/a>my whole life. \u00a0I&#8217;d go fishing down in the Everglades and my Dad would try to scare me and my brother with stories like, &#8220;See that indention in the sand&#8230; Skunk Ape slept there last night,&#8221; \u00a0or &#8220;see how that tree hangs over the water&#8230; Skunk Ape did that&#8230; nothing else could have bent it that way.&#8221; \u00a0It was always something completely ridiculous, but still scared me. \u00a0When I first met with Evan Lieberman, Cinematographer and producer on <em>SSS<\/em>, we hit it off immediately, not just because he was mad that I wrote a skunk ape feature before he could! \u00a0The year we shot the film (around Bradenton, Sarasota &amp; St. Pete, Florida), there were several hurricanes that hit Florida and lots of Skunk Ape sightings, so I still b<\/span><\/span><span><span>elieve<\/span><\/span><span><span>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <span><em>Thrill:<\/em><\/span><span> What&#8217;s your next project? More retro fun or are you going to try something different?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><em>JWE:<\/em><\/span><span> I have ideas for two more Skunk Ape movies, a Skunk Ape Trilogy. \u00a0Each successive film jumps ahead 5 years, so part two is early &#8217;70s with a country music soundtrack, then part 3 is late &#8217;70s punk rock. \u00a0I&#8217;d hit all my favorite musical genres that way. \u00a0But those scripts aren&#8217;t written yet. \u00a0Right now, I&#8217;m working on a script about an imaginary late night horror host, like Dr. Paul Bearer or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghoulardi\">Ghoulardi <\/a>or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Zacherle\">Zacherle<\/a>, and his crazy life that he hides behind his horror host persona. \u00a0It&#8217;s set in the early &#8217;60s. \u00a0I just love that time period, it was such a transition in the US, that I think makes a great setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-345\" title=\"skunkape3girls_33\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/skunkape3girls_33.jpg\" alt=\"skunkape3girls_33\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/skunkape3girls_33.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/skunkape3girls_33-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/skunkape3girls_33-785x523.jpg 785w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>STOMP!
