Michael McCarty wrote his latest collaboration with his co-author on speed dial for technical advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael would call and say, \u2018What\u2019s a wrap party like?\u2019\u201d laughed Linnea Quigley, the Davenport-born and raised actress who became known as one of the big \u201cscream queens\u201d in B-movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here in Iowa, I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on. She\u2019d had a lot of experiences like that,\u201d McCarty said in a dual phone interview. \u201cI would kind of take that and throw it into the book. It was really a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

The result is the book \u201cNight of the Scream Queen,\u201d where his writing and her expertise combine for the story of Desiree Starr, who gets more and more work wearing fewer and fewer costumes. Her life intersects with an Iowa soldier recruited to become a \u201csoldier of the future,\u201d Dr. Morrie Madden, a military mad scientist, and aging British actor Blake Smith. \u201cAll hell breaks loose,\u201d promotional material reads, \u201cin the Devil Bayou swamplands.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s available at several electronic retailers. McCarty will also have copies at book signings next weekend.<\/p>\n

Their collaboration began five years ago on a short story called \u201cWizard of Ooze.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe both had a lot of fun writing that, and that story kind of spiraled into this novel,\u201d McCarty said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been calling back and forth, back and forth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The book, McCarty said, also serves as a tribute to filmmaking of the past.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s back to when they were making monster movies the old-fashioned way, not with CGI,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a tribute to that. Linnea\u2019s been in quite a few of those.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, my gosh, yes,\u201d Quigley replied. \u201cWrestling with fake hands and arms and you have to make the move on them. You have to pretend like they\u2019re fighting you and you have to throw them off you while they\u2019re attacking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quigley has more than 100 movies to her credit over the past 35 years. The most recognized is her 1985 movie \u201cReturn of the Living Dead,\u201d which made it into mainstream movie houses.<\/p>\n

A publisher took McCarty up on his offer to write a book with Quigley over his last holiday break at Augustana College, Rock Island, where he works in the college store.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like an avalanche, it just happened like that. We were communicating back and forth, email, phone,\u201d McCarty said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael is just prolific at writing,\u201d Quigley added. \u201cOnce he gets hold of something, he shakes it until something comes out if he likes the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quigley has written two memoirs, as well as a spoof of Madonna\u2019s \u201cSex\u201d book, called \u201cSkin.\u201d<\/p>\n

But writing fiction was new to her, and something she enjoyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really getting into your imagination, thinking in a different way from what actually happened,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s what you\u2019d like to see. You don\u2019t go into as many redundant details; it\u2019s just more of the fun stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quigley is also at work getting the memoirs of her father, William, a former dean of education and executive vice president of Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, into print.<\/p>\n

She and McCarty are already discussing a sequel to \u201cNight of the Scream Queen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201d It was pretty smooth,\u201d McCarty said of working with Quigley. \u201cI\u2019ve worked with a lot of different collaborators over the years, and Linnea was really easy to get along with.
