Prolific and amiable writer\/director <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0400211\/\">JOHN HUFF<\/a> gave us the lowdown on this artful satire, and much more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thrillville.net\"><em>Will the Thrill<\/em><\/a>:\u00a0 You wrote 3 episodes of the classic series <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Kolchak\"><em>Kolchak: the Night Stalker<\/em><\/a> (&#8220;The Sentry&#8221; &#8220;Mr. R.I.N.G&#8221;. and &#8220;Bad Medicine&#8221;); can you talk a little about your experiences with that show (one of my personal favorites)?<\/p>\n<p><em>JH: <\/em>Thanks, Will, it was one of the luckiest experiences of my life to be able to break in on that show.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darren_McGavin\"> Darren McGavin<\/a> had seen a spec script I had worked on with my writing partner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1407438\/\">L. Ford Neale<\/a>.\u00a0 Darren liked that script enough to give us a chance to pitch for his new series being built around the wildly successful <em>Nightstalker<\/em> TV movies.\u00a0 We worked with Paul Playdon, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Chase\">David Chase <\/a>and ultimately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0155871\/\">Cy Chermak<\/a> but always under the guidance of the McGavins.\u00a0 We were lucky.\u00a0 McGavin could dismantle and reassemble a script idea with the best of them.\u00a0 It was always better after his transfusions.\u00a0 \u201cBad Medicine\u201d was the first.\u00a0 We got to go on a Nightstalker set at Universal and, of course, we were like fools going to the circus the first time.\u00a0 Neon signs above us that said, These dorks are new!<\/p>\n<p>I, like the giraffe at the party, opined to Cy Chermak that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001423\/\">Richard Kiel<\/a> (I only knew him from his <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0053546\/\">Thriller<\/a><\/em> appearance and the \u201cTo Serve Man\u201d episode of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Twilight_Zone\">Twilight Zone<\/a><\/em>) would make a neat Diablero-witch-monster for our upcoming episode.\u00a0 Cy crisply informed me casting decisions weren\u2019t the prerogative of\u00a0 writers, which I knew, but, interestingly enough, Richard Kiel got the part.\u00a0 That was a lesson to me.\u00a0 Make the pitch.\u00a0 All they can say is, No. But then they still might do it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr R.I.N.G.\u201d was re-concocted in the home of the McGavins, Darren and Kathy.\u00a0 I remember somebody holding a brandy snifter the size of a volleyball.\u00a0 Since we were doing <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, Darren, asked if we knew what the original Mary Shelly novel named the monster.\u00a0 He had asked that question for years, he said, and no one ever knew.\u00a0 \u201cAdam,\u201d I blurted.\u00a0 McGavin held me in awe for a nano-second.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t reveal I had learned that literary fact from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Famous_Monsters_of_Filmland\">Forrest J. Ackerman\u2019s <em>Famous Monsters of Filmland<\/em>.<\/a> (I recounted this incident to Mr. Ackerman years later.\u00a0 He laughed.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sentry.\u201d\u00a0 Ohhh, what it\u2019s like to write the last episode of a canceled TV series.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/jumptheshark\/\">Jump the Shark <\/a>my ass.\u00a0 One P.A. openly drank vodka from a bottle.\u00a0 He then said, in perfect French, \u201c<em>Ou et le docteur?<\/em> (sic) \u2013 (<em>Where is the doctor<\/em>?)\u201d and chugged some more vodka.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t pretty.\u00a0 We had been invited to the set by Darren that day. It was part of his education for us.\u00a0 The respected Seymour Robbie came in to direct.\u00a0 The entire episode is done in the lobby and parking lots and garages of Universal.\u00a0 The Black Tower has never been so revealed in its nether regions.\u00a0 I wanted better makeup for the monster.\u00a0 But that really didn\u2019t matter.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-529\" title=\"kolchak019\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/kolchak019.jpg\" alt=\"kolchak019\" width=\"443\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/kolchak019.jpg 642w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/kolchak019-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Thrill: H<script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/em>ere&#8217;s an admittedly broad and simplistic question, but given the uniquely personal quality of the material, I gotta ask: what was the inspiration for <em>Cyxork 7<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p><em>JH<\/em>: It was this:\u00a0 Andreas Kossak and I met on the set of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0113349\/\"><em>The Howling 7: New Moon Rising<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 That should explain everything.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t, I invite you to view the film.\u00a0 But then I will truck no surprise or amazement from you.\u00a0 You either know the reputation of this movie or you don\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s not my responsibility to shepherd you.\u00a0 I act in that movie.\u00a0 I\u2019m in it for almost 30 minutes total.\u00a0 I\u2019m no actor and I have <em>The Howling 7 <\/em>to prove it.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebobbriggs.com\/\"> Joe Bob Briggs<\/a> called me the \u201cLawrence Olivier\u201d of <em>The Howling 7<\/em>.\u00a0 When Joe Bob Briggs held forth with the Olivier assessment on the Nuctcracker Cable Network or whatever it was, some of my relatives immediately called me long distance.\u00a0 They hadn\u2019t phoned in years and have not done so since then.\u00a0 When Ray Wise acknowledged he had seen <em>Howling 7<\/em>, I ran and hid. The profoundness of the <em>Howling 7<\/em> experience defies words.\u00a0 It is a permanent tattoo on my soul.\u00a0 Somehow, the silent screen actor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0400210\/\">Jack Huff<\/a>, got listed in imdb as\u2026 <em>me<\/em>\u2026 acting in <em>The Howling 7<\/em>. After all those years.\u00a0 From working with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Pickford\">Mary Pickford<\/a> to <em>Howling 7.<\/em> That\u2019s some career arc for old Jack.\u00a0 I confess, I approved this error in imdb and even perpetuated it.\u00a0 However, it didn\u2019t fool Joe Bob Briggs nor did it fool <a href=\"http:\/\/www.videoscopemag.com\/\">the Phantom (Joe Kane) of VideoScope Magazine<\/a>.\u00a0 What can I say? I owe everything to <em>The Howling 7 <\/em>because it was there that I met Andreas Kossak.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-531\" title=\"howling7a\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/howling7a.jpg\" alt=\"howling7a\" width=\"326\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/howling7a.jpg 351w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/howling7a-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Yes, Virginia, there is a Howling 7&#8230;who knew?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Thrill: <\/em> Did the filming of your film begin to mirror the film with the film?<\/p>\n<p><em>JH:<\/em> Only the night we were shot at by the neighbor over-dosed on Coors-Lite.\u00a0 Our whole team was cool.\u00a0 Beata Pozniak was very stout.\u00a0 \u201cSmall arms,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s nothing.\u00a0 We heard this all the time in Poland.\u201d\u00a0 The night scene between Sonya Smith and Cassandra Creech is that night.\u00a0 Both actors were cool.\u00a0 We got the scenes.\u00a0 The rest of the time, it was almost like a big party.\u00a0 Sometimes it was called, \u201cClub John.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-532\" title=\"raywise\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/raywise.jpg\" alt=\"raywise\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/raywise.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/raywise-145x145.jpg 145w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/raywise-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Thrill:<\/em> How was it working with genre icon <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ray_Wise\">Ray Wise<\/a> (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Twin_Peaks\">Twin Peaks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robocop\">RoboCop<\/a><\/em>, etc)?<\/p>\n<p><em>JH:<\/em> Total awe.\u00a0 The man is seamless.\u00a0 Always prepared.\u00a0 Always supportive of his fellow players.\u00a0 Once I knew Ray would riff with his icon status and thereby comment on franchise-acting in general, I knew we had a singular opportunity.\u00a0 One of Ray\u2019s gifts as an actor is his awareness of \u201cthe little things.\u201d\u00a0 His riffs on acting, as he plays a troubled actor, are remarkable for their insight and revelation.\u00a0 I felt privileged to witness it. When he said of Kommander 88, \u201cI know that guy,\u201d he wasn\u2019t kidding.\u00a0 It was rare opportunity for Ray to comment on life in general and acting in particular.\u00a0 As a director, I just kept thanking him for what he was showing me.<\/p>\n<p><em>Thrill:<\/em> What&#8217;s next for you, film-wise?<\/p>\n<p><em>RW: <\/em>As we speak, Liz Jereski our casting director from <em>Cyxork<\/em>, is pitching a script in a preliminary casting test.\u00a0 We have finance but not enough for this person. It\u2019s going to fly on the script or not at all.\u00a0 We are small fry.\u00a0 But we do have a bona fide deal with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.troma.com\/\">Troma<\/a> and we have gotten some rave reviews and Bill Gibron in USA Today put us on his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/pm\/post\/67266-the-top-10-films-of-2008-that-you-never-heard-of\"><em>Ten Best List:\u00a0 \u201cThe Ten Best Films of 2008 You Never Heard Of.\u201d<\/em><\/a> Ryko working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lloydkaufman.com\/\">Lloyd Kaufman<\/a> and Michael Herz at Troma have done a valiant job.\u00a0 We have credibility from Santa Monica to Uzbek.\u00a0 We\u2019re indie filmmakers and we wouldn\u2019t have it any other way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Thrill:<\/em> I loved this film. It&#8217;s an honor, sir.<\/p>\n<p>What the REAL critics are saying about <strong><em>CYXORK 7<\/em><\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;WHAT&#8217;S REALLY\u00a0 IMPRESSIVE\u00a0 IS THE SHEER\u00a0 AMOUNT OF COMEDY THEY PACKED INTO \u201cCYXORK 7.\u201d\u00a0 ALL IN ALL, A FREAKING WOW!!\u00a0 IT\u2019S A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE PACKAGE CONTAINING JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU COULD ASK FOR FROM A MOVIE.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>STEVE ANDERSON, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmthreat.com\/\">FILM THREAT <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;PART COMEDY, PART SOCIAL COMMENTARY AND PART TWO FINGERS UP TO THE HOLLYWOOD MACHINE.
