We were email pals for years before she invited me to her show (at the now sadly defunct Chandler Cinemas) in April of 2008. In person she is extremely gracious and sweet &#8211; you&#8217;d never know that beneath this Nice &#8216;n&#8217; Pretty Gal veneer beats the hipster heart of a hardcore gorehound! She also arranged the coolest birthday cake I have ever had &#8211; in the shape of a fez! It was a testament both to her warmth as a person and to her incredibly creative nature. As an innovative and talented hostess\/programmer, she has single-handedly brought Cult Movie Cool to the Southwest. Now MMM is taking her act on the road. Chandler Cinemas, 4\/08<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Thrill:<\/em> What are the ideal types of movies you like to present?<br \/>\n<em>MMM:<\/em> Hmmm that&#8217;s tough!\u00a0 I am pretty fond of the staples of the genres, the bigger name cult titles (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lucio_fulci\">Fulci<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russ_Meyer\">Meyer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radley_Metzger\">Metzger<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mario_Bava\">Bava<\/a> etc.).\u00a0 After doing this for a few years, I&#8217;ve realized that to break even you have to play titles that are recognizable to fans of the genres (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horror_films\">Horror<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exploitation_film\">Exploitation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giallo\">Giallo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blaxploitation\">Blaxploitation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexploitation\">Sexploitation<\/a>).\u00a0 However, I have a soft spot for the bizarre, forgotten treasures of the various genres.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always such a special feeling when you find a something on 35mm or video that has never been released on DVD and then being able to share that with new people, giving it a new a new life, that&#8217;s what its all about!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-619\" title=\"scheduleaugustcmyk-10-inch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/scheduleaugustcmyk-10-inch.gif\" alt=\"scheduleaugustcmyk-10-inch\" width=\"508\" height=\"736\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-621\" title=\"schedule-mar08-cmyk-8-inch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/schedule-mar08-cmyk-8-inch.gif\" alt=\"schedule-mar08-cmyk-8-inch\" width=\"516\" height=\"747\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Thrill: <\/em>You&#8217;re from New Zealand &#8211; what kind of exposure did you get to these types of films growing up?<br \/>\n<em>MMM:<\/em> Pretty minimal.\u00a0 As a kid, it was the standard fare of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grease_Movie\">Grease<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starwars.com\/\">Star Wars<\/a><\/em>, with a dash of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sid_and_Marty_Krofft\">Sid &amp; Marty Krofft<\/a> thrown in.\u00a0 In my late teens I started attending the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.incrediblystrange.co.nz\/\">Incredibly Strange Film Festival,<\/a> put on by my programming mentor Ant Timpson.\u00a0 With one of the largest genre archives of 35mm film he would put on these fantastic 2 week festivals loaded with exploitation and more.\u00a0 It completely blew my mind and was an annual event that my friends and I would look forward to.\u00a0 That was the main exposure and from then on out my appetite kept growing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-624\" title=\"schedulemay09edit-8-inch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/schedulemay09edit-8-inch.jpg\" alt=\"schedulemay09edit-8-inch\" width=\"484\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/schedulemay09edit-8-inch.jpg 576w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/schedulemay09edit-8-inch-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Thrill: <\/em>How tough is it selling these movies to a modern Southwest audience?<br \/>\n<em>MMM:<\/em> It&#8217;s definitely not easy.\u00a0 I have been absolutely blessed with the support of the local media, which has really helped my cause, but even with all the coverage I receive it is a tough road.\u00a0 The city is really spread out and the most common complaint or inhabitant that people site as to why they don&#8217;t come out is because of the distance.\u00a0 I was based in the East Valley for the past 2 years and it was often times a struggle to get people to make the trip.\u00a0 So I have tried to stay on top of innovative programming and making it more than just watching a movie.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a communal atmosphere where like-minded individuals can come together to see these films on the big screen, the way they were meant to be seen!<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-623\" title=\"april08-8-inch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/april08-8-inch.gif\" alt=\"april08-8-inch\" width=\"487\" height=\"707\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Thrill:<\/em> What&#8217;s your ideal career move?<br \/>\n<em>MMM:<\/em> My ideal career move is to have my own permanent venue that can be a revival house, as well as home for independent, low-budget features, shorts etc.\u00a0 I would love to have a place that the community supports and can rely on for showing films that cannot be found at the multiplex.\u00a0 I would also love to get more in to the distribution and preservation of lost 35mm titles.\u00a0 Films that are not currently available on DVD, transferring them to digital so that they can be shared with the masses!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-622\" title=\"main_01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/main_01.jpg\" alt=\"main_01\" width=\"588\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/main_01.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/main_01-300x186.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/main_01-785x487.jpg 785w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANDREA BEESLEY-BROWN, better known around her Arizona haunts as MIDNITE MOVIE MAMACITA, is the B Movie Nation&#8217;s official Southwest Representative.
