{"id":10673,"date":"2014-08-22T07:50:37","date_gmt":"2014-08-22T13:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=10673"},"modified":"2014-08-22T07:50:37","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T13:50:37","slug":"13-sins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=10673","title":{"rendered":"13 Sins"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"asset-body\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: PoynterOSTextThreeL Roman; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: PoynterOSTextThreeL Roman; font-size: small;\">A remake of a 2006 Thai thriller known in America as <strong>&#8220;<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0883995\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\"><strong>13: Game of Death<\/strong><\/a><strong>,&#8221; &#8220;13 Sins&#8221;<\/strong> is an implausible but agreeably pulpy (and occasionally bloody) B movie about a financially stressed young man (Mark Webber) in New Orleans who is recruited by a mysterious voice on his cellphone to participate in a secret &#8220;game&#8221; of &#8220;13 challenges&#8221; that will enable him to win millions of dollars.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"more\" class=\"asset-more\">\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-none\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.commercialappeal.com\/the_bloodshot_eye\/sins\/13sinsrut.jpg\" alt=\"true bloo - er, true love: Rutina Wesley and Mark Webber\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" \/><\/span> <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\">\u00a0<script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The challenges initially are simply gross (eat a fly) or mean (&#8220;Make a child cry&#8221;). Predictably, they become increasingly disturbing and criminal, attracting the attention of a police detective (Ron Perlman) and causing strife with the young man&#8217;s fianc\u00e9e (Rutina Wesley of <strong>&#8220;True Blood&#8221;<\/strong>), his &#8220;Rain Man&#8221; brother (Devon Graye) and his racist father (Tom Bower). &#8220;Try to think of this in the most positive, empowering way as a gun pointed to your head,&#8221; says the voice on the phone, which belongs to a man who seems to be omnipotent and omniscient.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-none\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.commercialappeal.com\/the_bloodshot_eye\/sins\/sins13ron.jpg\" alt=\"give 'em hell, boy: Ron Perlman\" width=\"420\" height=\"295\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"justify\">Director Daniel Stamm (<strong>&#8220;The Last Exorcism&#8221;<\/strong>) manages one memorable set piece, involving a motorcycle gang and a clothes line. More often, the direction is simply functional, to balance a story as fanciful as those penned in an earlier age by Edgar Wallace and Cornell Woolrich. The film&#8217;s ideal viewer is probably a 12-year-old boy, who will enjoy imagining &#8220;challenges&#8221; for himself and his friends, and who won&#8217;t be bothered\u00a0by the absurdity of the premise, the cheapness of the &#8220;shock&#8221; twists or the direct-to-VOD esthetic.
