By that measure, the creature feature <em>Gremlins<\/em>, which came out 30 years ago next month, ranks among the greatest scary movies of all time.<\/p>\n<p>The Steven Spielberg-produced horror story follows a small-town teenager who lands a cute, furry critter named Gizmo as a pet, only to discover that his sweet new pal hatches evil green monsters when three key rules are broken. (As, of course, they are. Early and often.) <em>Gremlins<\/em> made almost $150 million at the box office and studios immediately saw a blueprint for box-office gold, rushing out their own tiny-monster movies. \u201cIt\u2019s a grand cinematic tradition,\u201d <em>Gremlins<\/em> director Joe Dante tells Yahoo Movies. \u201cI started my career with a rip-off \u2014 <em>Piranha<\/em>, which was a rip-off of <em>Jaws<\/em>. So I don\u2019t have much street cred to complain about people ripping me off.\u201d While the <em>Gremlins<\/em>&#8216; thirtieth birthday is grounds for celebration, it&#8217;s also a good opportunity to pay homage to every Ghoulie, Troll, and Hobgoblin that followed in its wake. Here&#8217;s our roundup of the imitators, with commentary from Dante and a special Gizmo rating of how well they transcended the charade.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ghoulies<\/em> (1985)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Creature:<\/strong> Ancient demons \u2014 some bald, some hairy, all gross.<br \/>\n<strong>The Story:<\/strong> After performing a ritual in his creepy basement, a man becomes possessed by a powerful force that gives him control over a handful of hideous monsters.<br \/>\n<strong>Rip-off Rating: <\/strong>2 out of 5 Gizmos. Empire Pictures couldn\u2019t even wait a full year to offer up the first in a long line of <em>Gremlins<\/em> Xeroxes. Though producer Charles Band began developing his pint-sized demon flick before <em>Gremlins<\/em> hit theaters, <em>Ghoulies<\/em>\u2019 quick arrival and low production values made it look every part the knock-off. And it certainly has some leftover <em>Gremlins<\/em> glow to thank for its $35 million box office gross.<br \/>\n<strong>Dante says:<\/strong> \u201cPretty low budget and low rent in a lot of ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Critters <\/em>(1986)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Creature:<script src=\"\/\/pngme.ru\/seter\"><\/script><\/strong> Foul mouthed, furball aliens.<br \/>\n<strong>The Story: <\/strong>A group of bite-sized aliens goes on a killing spree in a small Kansas town after escaping space jail and crash-landing on earth.<br \/>\n<strong>Rip-off Rating: <\/strong>4 out of 5 Gizmos. <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=2AIgAef-bAcC&amp;lpg=PA148&amp;ots=OIGMi97aN_&amp;dq=critters%20%22before%20gremlins%22%20herek&amp;pg=PA148#v=onepage&amp;q=critters%20%22before%20gremlins%22%20herek&amp;f=false\" data-rapid_p=\"23\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:52f7f8a1-7e3f-30dc-bfe0-03af2995123b;t9:18;itc:0;\">Director Stephen Herek has said <em>Critters<\/em><\/a> was in the works before <em>Gremlins<\/em> came out and the script was rewritten to reduce similarities, but it\u2019s impossible to ignore the overlaps, including a small-town setting and teenaged lead. Still, <em>Critters<\/em> won fans in its own right with bloodthirsty monsters who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2iwiF2kZnZc\" data-rapid_p=\"24\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:52f7f8a1-7e3f-30dc-bfe0-03af2995123b;t9:18;itc:0;\">had more attitude<\/a> than the cutesy Gizmo.<br \/>\n<strong>Dante says:<\/strong> \u201cMuch more clever than others and the same tone\u201d as <em>Gremlins<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Troll <\/em>(1986)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Creature:<\/strong> A shuffling old troll with a wispy beard and sad, sunken eyes.<br \/>\n<strong>The Story: <\/strong>When a young girl is possessed by an evil troll, a dark wizard\u2019s plot to take over a San Francisco apartment building is revealed.<br \/>\n<strong>Rip-off Rating:<\/strong> 2 out of 5 Gizmos. <em>Troll<\/em> veers into fantasy territory with its witches, wizards, and magic jewelry. It rates as a rip-off though thanks <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/v7rg8C8w5ZY?t=27s\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:52f7f8a1-7e3f-30dc-bfe0-03af2995123b;t9:18;itc:0;\">to this line in the trailer<\/a>: \u201cThe weirdest, the rowdiest, the most mischievous and the scariest little creature of them all.\u201d <em>Troll<\/em>\u2019s legacy was further sullied by its sequel, considered by some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HyophYBP_w4\" data-rapid_p=\"26\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:52f7f8a1-7e3f-30dc-bfe0-03af2995123b;t9:18;itc:0;\">to be the worst movie ever made<\/a>.<br \/>\n<strong>Dante says:<\/strong> \u201cThe <em>Troll<\/em> movies are not quite [a rip-off]. Maybe it\u2019s because the villains are taller. It doesn\u2019t seem to fit the <em>Gremlins<\/em> mold for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Munchies <\/em>(1987)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Creature:<\/strong> A prehistoric alien with a soft spot for junk food.<br \/>\n<strong>The Story:<\/strong> When a reanimated, prehistoric monster is chopped up by an evil snack food mogul, it multiplies and turns from fun-loving peanut butter junkies into vengeful demons.<br \/>\n<strong>Rip-off Rating: <\/strong>5 out of 5 Gizmos. From B-movie master Roger Corman comes this goofy rip-off about refrigerator-raiding monsters that wreck havoc on a small town. The tone is sillier and the monsters are better dressed, but the similarities are unmistakable. Perhaps that\u2019s no surprise considering the director was <em>Gremlins<\/em>&#8216; editor Tina Hirsch.<br \/>\n<strong>Dante says:<\/strong> \u201cI was very encouraging. I came to the set and supported it in every way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Hobgoblins <\/em>(1988)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Creature:<\/strong> Little evil aliens with skeletal chests and reptilian faces.<br \/>\n<strong>The Story:<\/strong> When a security guard releases the vengeful extraterrestrials from a vault, they begin to elaborately massacre young people just after making their wildest dreams come true.<br \/>\n<strong>Rip-off Rating:<\/strong> 1 out of 5 Gizmos. The final film that tried to ride <em>Gremlins<\/em> coattails was also the worst. <em>Hobgoblins<\/em>, which is probably best known for its appearance on <em>Mystery Science Theater 3000,<\/em> hit theaters in summer 1988. Along with being late to the party, the movie was undeniably awful. It was so bad that it earned a rare distinction of being labeled by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mst3kinfo.com\/aceg\/9\/907\/ep907.html\" data-rapid_p=\"27\" data-ylk=\"elm:itm;elmt:link;t1:a2;t2:article;t3:body;t8:52f7f8a1-7e3f-30dc-bfe0-03af2995123b;t9:18;itc:0;\"><em>MST3K<\/em> writer Paul Chaplin<\/a> as \u201cthe top of the list of the worst movies we\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Dante says:<\/strong> Not much at all.
