True movie geeks will be in the queue for just one picture this week: Alex Stapleton\u2019s joyous tribute to B-movie legend Roger Corman.<\/p>\n

With a career spanning six decades and more than 450 pictures, it\u2019s amazing nobody has produced a full-length feature film on the 2009 Lifetime Oscar winner before.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s equally amazing that a former journalist with no directing experience blagged herself the gig.<\/p>\n

\\\\Stapleton does a creditable job. The uninspired approach fails to recreate any recognisable Corman aesthetic \u2013 it\u2019s too tasteful for one thing \u2013 but Stapleton marshals the overwhelming amount of material into a neat narrative for newbies: the zeitgeist-tapping 1960s films that laid the groundwork and trained the talent for the landmark new Hollywood movies; and the 1970s production line of self-financed exploitation cheapies that was abruptly ended by the unprecedented success of Jaws and Star Wars.<\/p>\n

The plentiful archive clips are shocking, funny and perverse but the talking heads are even better.<\/p>\n

Seasoned directors such as Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme and Ron Howard gush boyishly of their time working under the skinflint anti-perfectionist.<\/p>\n

And Jack Nicholson, perhaps Corman\u2019s most famous discovery, eventually breaks down in nostalgic tears.<\/p>\n
