\nIt is an old Hollywood maxim that everyone flees from failure. When a big movie bellyflops at the box office \u2014 like John Carter, which has pulled in a cringe-inducing $62 million in the U.S. in its first three weekends, barely a fourth of the film\u2019s $250 million budget \u2014 usually everyone involved tries to get as much distance as they can from the film, as quickly as they can get it. Everyone\u2019s hoping to salvage not only their careers, but their psyches as well, especially when that much blood, sweat, and treasure has been invested in a passion project that\u2019s become a media punching bag.<\/p>\n

Apparently, no one told Taylor Kitsch this is how he\u2019s supposed to behave. When EW caught up with the actor a few hours before he was embarking on his global press tour for Battleship \u2014 his second effects-laden big budget studio picture this year \u2014 the 30-year-old actor said he had \u201cabsolutely no regrets\u201d about his first big screen starring role. \u201cI would do John Carter again tomorrow,\u201d he says forthrightly. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of John Carter. Box office doesn\u2019t validate me as a person, or as an actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kitsch understands that the sci-fi adventure\u2019s financial failings \u2014 while it\u2019s pulled in over $230 million worldwide, Disney still expects to lose $200 million on the film \u2014 are clearly \u201cunfortunate,\u201d if for no other reason than it\u2019s a virtual certainty that director Andrew Stanton\u2019s planned two sequels will never see a greenlight. \u201cI\u2019d love to go do John Carter 2,\u201d he says. \u201cI really would. It\u2019s just s\u2014ty I don\u2019t get to work with the [John Carter] family. It really was a special thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Kitsch isn\u2019t dwelling on the past. \u201cI\u2019m going to keep working,\u201d he says. Kitsch points out that after Battleship, he\u2019s got Oliver Stone\u2019s Savages coming out in July, and then he\u2019ll likely start shooting the Navy SEAL drama Lone Survivor for Battleship director Peter Berg in the fall. \u201cIt\u2019s an exciting time,\u201d he says, and he clearly means it.
