There are two reasons I didn\u2019t like \u201cLooper\u201d very much. The first is how the cast talked about the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the best acting I have done,\u201d Joseph Gordon Levitt said in an interview at this past summer\u2019s Comic Con.<\/p>\n

Emily Blunt, in the same interview, said \u201cI think it is probably one of the best movies I have been lucky enough to be in.\u201d <\/p>\n

I disagree with both actors; Blunt\u2019s best work is \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d or \u201cThe Young Victoria,\u201d while Levitt\u2019s best performance still is \u201c500 Days of Summer,\u201d but clearly he has been in far more impressive films like \u201cInception and \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d<\/p>\n

If all that wasn\u2019t enough overselling, Bruce Willis himself said to Esquire magazine, \u201cIt\u2019s better than anything I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n

C\u2019mon guys, either they saw something completely different or they are being paid to hype this thing because, while it is very interesting and above average, it is not one of those films that blows you away.<\/p>\n

Kansas 2044, time travel has not been invented yet, but that will happen 30 years in the future and be illegal. However, certain criminal circles are using the time travel technology to send people from the future to the present so hired men called loopers can kill them when they show up.<\/p>\n

Joe (Levitt) is one of those people. He waits for a specific time in a cane field in Kansas, and when the person appears, head covered, tied up, with payment strapped to his back, he kills him without blinking. These same people he is working for like to close all the gaps, so eventually the looper\u2019s future self is one of the intended targets.<\/p>\n

Joe fails to kill his older self (Willis) and instead gets more information on his own future and what darkness waits 30 years ahead.<\/p>\n

Oscar pundit and film critic Jeffery Welles complained that \u201cLooper\u201d didn\u2019t explore the conversation he would have expected \u201cpresent Joe\u201d and \u201cfuture Joe\u201d to have when they met.<\/p>\n

Writer and director Rain Wilson (who also directed Levitt in \u201cBrick\u201d and \u201cThe Brothers Bloom\u201d) avoids the type of conversation piece Welles expected by having Willis\u2019s character say he doesn\u2019t want to talk about any of \u201cthat stuff,\u201d saying how they will just spend hours discussing things that won\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n

Instead, the script is very eager to push forward. \u201cLooper\u201d isn\u2019t so much an action-focused film either. While there are a fair amount of violent scenes, it isn\u2019t so much an action film. Where the film does succeed is the prosthetics and makeup used to make Levitt look like a younger Willis.<\/p>\n

The other reason I had a major problem with this film, without spoiling anything, is how much one of the characters in \u201cLooper\u201d is copied from \u201cX-Men: The Last Stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were even moments of the film where I felt the focus should be changed from one character to another and from one plot to another. I found the pace sluggish until Blunt\u2019s character comes on the scene. Her character gives the film a boost right when it needs it.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooper\u201d just isn\u2019t ground breaking and I wasn\u2019t as impressed with the amount of science fiction cinematics this film pulled off with a small budget as much as I was with \u201cChronicle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Final Thought \u2014 Oversold in hype, underwhelming in delivery.
