{"id":7426,"date":"2013-06-19T12:47:39","date_gmt":"2013-06-19T18:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=7426"},"modified":"2013-06-19T12:48:29","modified_gmt":"2013-06-19T18:48:29","slug":"sharknado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bmovienation.com\/?p=7426","title":{"rendered":"Sharknado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s the storm of the century \u2014 with teeth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSharknado\u201d is a new B-movie, produced for the Syfy channel, that that pits hundreds of man-eating sharks against plastic-surgery victim Tara Reid and the rest of the silicone-flavored populace of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually in A shark movie, it\u2019s \u2018don\u2019t go in the water,\u2019 says Thomas Vitale, executive vice president for programming and original movies at Syfy. \u201cIn \u2018Sharknado,\u2019 the sharks come to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It debuts July 11.<\/p>\n<p>The premise is as ridiculous \u2014 and for lovers of monster movies, as awesome \u2014 as they come:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a freak hurricane swamps Los Angeles, thousands of sharks terrorize the waterlogged populace. And when the high-speed winds form tornadoes in the desert, nature\u2019s deadliest killer rules water, land, and air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The movie\u2019s poster features a great white shark leering out of a spinning vortex of fins and teeth, with the tagline \u201cSharknado: Enough Said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inexplicably, the tornados that suck up the sharks \u2014 and hurl them through windows and roofs and send them raining down on screaming teens \u2014 are unable to lift any other forms of sea life, leaving the hungry beasts no choice but to eat people.<\/p>\n<p>The film, which also stars \u201cBeverly Hills 90210\u201d alum Ian Ziering, took a few weeks to film and cost around $2 million. It was among the most buzzed-about projects last month at the prestigious TV Festival de Cannes, says Vitale, who has spearheaded the channel\u2019s decade-long push to offer low-budget monster movies on Saturday (and, this summer, Thursday) nights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternally [at Syfy], we spend a lot of time joking about the movies, but when you\u2019ve done 250 of them we really have to start playing around with these ideas,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Like many of Syfy\u2019s films, \u201cSharknado\u201d was produced for the network by The Asylum, an L.A.-based schlock factory that has created such gems as \u201cSnakes on a Train,\u201d \u201cAbraham Lincoln vs. Zombies,\u201d \u201c2-Headed Shark Attack\u201d and \u201cMega Shark vs. Crocosaurus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently they really like sharks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not comedies,\u201d Vitale notes. \u201cThey have that outlandish, campy, over-the-top tone, but the people involved are real and want to survive.
