It looks as though \u201cI, Frankenstein\u201d is deteriorating before our very eyes.<\/p>\n
Pre-weekend projections had Lionsgate\u2019s horror-inspired actioner in the mid-teens this weekend. That was reigned back to $10 million midday Friday, and now its total looks even grimmer: about $7.7 million, well shy of double digits.<\/p>\n
\u201cI, Frankenstein\u201d cost a reported $65 million to produce, not including the marketing costs that producer Lakeshore Entertainment wound up assuming, thus limiting Lionsgate\u2019s exposure on the likely flop. Of its $2.8 million Friday haul, roughly 60% came from 3D engagements, which is slightly higher than usual for the format. It\u2019s expected to land in sixth overall at the domestic marketplace by Sunday\u2019s end.<\/p>\n
With \u201cI, Frankenstein\u201d the only wide opener this frame, several holdovers are left to take up the slack \u2014 including Universal\u2019s \u201cRide Along,\u201d which just broke the Martin Luther King holiday weekend record with $48.6 million in four days. The laffer\u2019s looking at another $20 million Friday-Sunday for first place.<\/p>\n
Behind it, Open Road\u2019s \u201cThe Nut Job\u201d and Universal\u2019s \u201cLone Survivor\u201d are also continuing to hold up the box office, \u201cNut Job\u201d with $11 million projected this weekend and \u201cLone Survivor\u201d with $12 million.<\/p>\n
Focus Features expanded \u201cDallas Buyers Club\u201d following Oscar nods for best picture, best actor and best supporting actor, among others. The drama\u2019s looking at almost $2 million for the weekend, taking its domestic cume just past the $20 million mark.
