You know there’s going to be a man that loses it and goes on a killing spree.  It’s been done, so how would Buddy Hutchins compare and stand out?  Director Jared Cohn and actor Jamie Kennedy do an excellent job making Buddy Hutchins an absorbing film.  How psycho and crazy would Jamie have to act in order to make it memorable and would he have to be over the top, which often backfires?  Jared wrote and directed the character Buddy to make him crazy when needed, yet kept Buddy’s character reeled back enough so it’s believable that Buddy simply is a common troubled man.

The film begins with Buddy (Jamie Kennedy) barricading himself in a house and panicking as he’s surrounded by police.  It then flashes back a couple of months and we see Buddy as a loving family man.  What happens to this family man?

Very soon everything falls apart for Buddy and his troubles keep piling up, his business, home, family problems, and money issues, along with some skeletons in the closet resurfacing.  It’s rather disturbing and frightening because what Buddy goes through is common for a lot of people, but his is all happening at the same time and it’s enough to drive anyone to the brink of insanity.

Once he snaps and begins his rampage, it’s interesting how he’s able to play it off as a normal guy (for the most part) when he’s talking to authorities or his daughter and not just going ballistic the entire film.  The madness ramps up when Buddy breaks out a chainsaw and everyone in his path is his enemy.  However, not saying they deserved it, but typically he went after bad people who ruined his life…with the exception of maybe a few innocent people.  His relationship with his daughter and mother has a big impact on his actions as he only wants the best for them.  After recalling all that he’s been through and considering most of his victims, you kind of feel a tiny bit sympathetic, in a sick way nonetheless.

Buddy Hutchins is an entertaining film with a good story and some of the audience may end up applauding Buddy. Those of you that do please don’t run out and buy a chainsaw!
