Sharknado 3 Is D.C. Bound

The iconic image of big-screen Washington destruction — the White House getting blown to smithereens at the hands of aliens in “Independence Day” — will have some competition.

This time, it’s death by sharks.

The Syfy channel on Monday announced that Washington will be among the settings for “Sharknado 3,” the latest installment in the campy disaster-movie franchise featuring an improbable weather phenomenon in which a freak storm scoops up sharks from the ocean and deposits them on unsuspecting cities. A tweet from the network boasted that the newest flick will feature the “Feast Coast,” from Orlando to Washington.

The original was set in Los Angeles; “Sharknado 2″ brought the chomping to New York, which meant that scenes from “Sharknado 2″ were shot against classic Manhattan backdrops, including Times Square.

Which means scenes could film right here in the District?

A Syfy rep was mum on details about filming, but we say the city should get ready for its close-ups anyway. The Washington Monument flattened by a school of giant fish? Fins circling ominously in the Reflecting Pool?

Our colleagues at the Capital Weather Gang started an online poll allowing readers to vote for the Washington V.I.P. whose cameo they’d most like to see in the film. As of Monday afternoon, Vice President Biden was leading, beating out other luminaries including House Speaker John Boehner and first dog Bo Obama (nooo, not the puppy!).
