A group of Indiana based fans of popular culture have decided to plant a flag in Indianapolis, Indiana for the incubation of regional pop culture and celebration of emerging global popular culture. The stars of the exploding YouTube scene including Markiplier, The Completionist, and Jacksepticeye with over 10 million combined weekly viewers are descending upon Indianapolis June 26th-28th at the Indianapolis Convention Center to take part in what is defining itself as the must-go event of the rising Millennial culture scene. The Millennial are defined as those born between 1981 and 2001.
“We decided to shine a very bright light on the changing viewing habits and fandom base of the rising Millennial generation,” tells Carl Doninger, President of Pop Con LLC. “We really wanted to define our event as not a traditional convention, but a convergence between emerging culture and the people that love it.”
Indy PopCon also features a salute to North America’s oldest independent film studio, Troma, as well as a nod to the originators of the Sharknado franchise, “The Asylum”, over a hundred independent artists, podcasters, and comic book professionals. Voice actors and anime professionals are more than well represented with industry professionals like Peter Spellos making an appearance. Traditional and crossover stars such as Star Trek’s John de Lancie, Zach Galligan of Gremlins fame and Ciara Hanna, the Yellow Power Ranger will all grace this year’s Indy PopCon.
The opening event for Indy Pop Con is a screening of the 1980’s bubble gum classic “Flash Gordon” with star Sam Jones in attendance. This movie has gripped the imagination of the Millennials with its vibrancy and outright campiness.
