Fiend Without a Face (1958)

In a Canadian town, men are found dead with both their brains and spinal cords missing. The US army and the local GP Dr Bradley (PETER MADDEN) are baffled as to the cause. The hostile locals believe that the local US air base is the cause of the deaths because of their research with atomic power to boost their radar system. However, Major Cummings (MARSHALL THOMPSON) discovers that the eccentric Professor Walgate (KYNASTON REEVES) has created monsters that thrive on human brain in order to survive during his experiments with electrical thought transference and he found a way of diverting some of the atomic power from the air base in order to boost his electrical apparatus…

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE is a pretty tedious sci-fi shocker from b-movie specialists “Eros Films”. The film comes complete with the imported fading American star (in this case Marshall Thompson) in the best b-feature tradition of the time and the film is little more than talk, talk, talk for the most part. However, it must be said that the monsters when they finally manifest themselves are quite impressive and there is one slightly unnerving dice-with-death scene at the climax where our heroes are trapped inside Walgate’s house. The creatures come flying in through the windows in all directions and they are frantically trying to shoot them all. But it’s a pity that the film takes far too long to get to this and what comes before is completely lacking in suspense and the ending is predictable in the extreme. The entire cast performs adequately but there is no major standout performance.
