Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981)

his is one of those movies that doesn’t even make sense for one second.I mean:Flying Piranhas who live in in salt water!WAAHAA

It is unbelievable that one could make such a crappy movie. The acting is horrendous, the story is even worse and the music is so eighties that it explodes your windows of horror. This is yet another addition to the countless row of JAWS rip offs.JAWS is really great movie but the problem of that film is the amount of bad remakes of rip offs that it caused. But I can’t really blame Spielberg for that.

Looking at the first half hour or so of PIRANHA II:THE SPAWNING(or FLYING KILLERS) you’re almost thinking that you’re watching some cheap az German erotic flick from the seventies,I mean the dialogue is so simple and the nudity is so overdone. The only slightly funny character in the movie is Gabby played by Ancile Gloudon(who doesn’t know him?)but that’s probably because his acting is so bad that even I could improve on that and because he looks like Richie Havens. The way that he dodges the flying Piranhas is extremely hilarious but I’m not sure if it was meant to be.The rest of the cast is full of amateurs and other miserable people. The only pretty famous actor here is Lance Hendriksen who became a Cameron regular. The rest of the cast is an assembly of amateurs from which the greatest achievement is a role in the horrible soap opera LOVE BOAT.

The story is full of nonsense and it is completely unconvincing. The Piranhas can fly and live in the sea, that is salt water! They are supposed to be an experiment by the army but the explanation is totally ridiculous. The gory moments are totally forgettable, but there is one scene which is pretty surprising. At one point a piranha jumps out of a corpse(!!!)just like the Alien in the classic sci-fi horror movie by Ridley Scot:ALIEN.It is funny to see that Cameron used this copy and would later go on to make the superb remake ALIENS which in my view exceeds the original.

Yes,the acclaimed block buster director James Cameron was the director of this movie although rumours say that producer Ovidio G. Assonitis took over direction after a quarrel with young Cameron.Let’s hope for Cameron that these rumours are true. If not than Cameron made a real mess here, but we’ll forgive him.It was only his second movie and his next two movies would become all time classics:THE TERMINATOR(his greatest achievement)and ALIENS,funny enough both with Lance Hendriksen.Other great Cameron flicks are TERMINATOR II and TRUE LIES both with Schwarzenegger.
