Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Deep in the woods, a comet crashes, luring an old man (what seems to be a “Blob” homage). He finds a circus tent… but inside isn’t a circus, but killer clowns who want to trap you in cotton candy cocoons and do terrible things to you. Just try telling the police, because they won’t believe you. Shadow puppets that eat bus passengers? Yeah, that’s plausible!

I don’t know why, but “Killer Klowns” was one of those films that made the rounds when I was younger. Pretty much everyone my age has seen it when they were a kid, and nobody can probably explain why. It wasn’t a big hit, it’s not a particularly good film. I remember Best Buy promoting it heavily when it came out many years ago, but was that all it took for b-movie junkies to pick this one up and terrorize their friends? Maybe.

In all fairness, for the budget the film is pretty good, and the Chiodo Brothers go a long way to make even a dumb idea look slick. The special effects are tight and the costumes are amazing. The cocoons and other props are believable for what they are. And, you will have fun unless you have a big stick up your butt. Maybe even if you have the stick you’ll have fun, as I don’t know you personally and your like or dislike of sticks.

I saw this film screened in Chicago in October 2010 with the Chiodo Brothers in attendance. It’s even better with a big audience, who applaud or laugh at the right moments. What is really interesting, after hearing them talk, is how much story they really developed and how much character development there was. If what they said is true, a sequel may be coming our way soon.

You’ve probably already seen “Killer Klowns” if you’re into that sort of thing, but if you haven’t you ought to see it. I mean, as far as clown humor-comedy movies go, this has to be the best, right? Comedies, no way. Horror films, no way. I mean, can you beat “It”? But as horror-comedies go, this one is it. Feel free to try and prove me wrong, because if there’s a better one I want it in my collection.
