James Gunn: A Statement

I have met James Gunn, James Gunn in the past has been very gracious and graced me with his assistance. I am also proud to call independent film giant, Lloyd Kaufman a friend. I have been to his home, commiserated with him and would have to say some of the most entertaining evenings have been spent in his company. He is thoughtful, provocative and I understand fully that his career and his movies are high forms of performance art. They are crass, often lewd and have in them a frat boy sensibility who throws out deep philosophical messaging wrapped in the crassest way possible. He does so to shock, offend and to drive home a point.

It is not how I would speak to the world, but it is how he chooses to do so and I support him and consider him a beacon for many free thinking artists around the world. He has a body of work which should be admired and reflected on.

James Gunn was an avid protege of Lloyd Kaufman, a visionary in his own right. He struggled to find his own voice in the world and based a lot of what he knew about movies at the feet of Lloyd Kaufman, he made comments that were meant to shock as an aspect in his own cinematic discovery. He later regretted his comments and attempted to retract them. These comments were well known, Disney knew about before they got into business with James.

Hollywood is a dirty place, it is a fountain of hypocrisy, vendettas and rampant pettiness. At times it is the ugliest place on the planet and absent of many needed human qualities like the ability to forgive and to judge people solely on their actions. James Gunn is a masterful filmmaker, in my mind a good person. He will make more movies, but I suspect it will be outside the studio system. Disney in its own way has fallen on it’s own knife, the Guardians franchise is tied to Gunn, and his forced departure will deeply weaken this franchise.

What has happened is wrong, it is cruel and it really is another indicator that Hollywood is floating adrift in a pretentious sea of misguided political correctness.

While abandoning the core and the message of Christianity, Hollywood is adopting the worst attributes of its far right practitioners.

So watch yourselves.“If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” Luke 17:3-4

I for one am really looking forward to Mr. Gunn’s next effort.
