Classic B’s In Bridgeport

The monthly “Bedlam at the Bijou” series on Thursday, June 20, is featuring the original 1950s B-movies that inspired three big-budget remakes — “The Thing” and “The Fly.”

The “Before They Were Remakes” program at Bridgeport’s Bijou Theatre will start at 7 p.m. with “The Vault of Horror” blogger Brian Solomon serving as master of ceremonies. Joe Meyers of the Hearst Media News Group will be an intermission guest.

“The Thing” (1951) has inspired two remakes — in 1982 and 2011 — and “The Fly” (1958) was remade in 1986 with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.

“Although much maligned, the horror remake is not always the worst thing in the world. It seems that remaking the classics of horror has been Hollywood’s favorite shortcut for decades, but every now and then, they get it right … (at the Bijou) we journey back to the 1950s to experience the original gems that inspired these superb remakes,” Solomon said.
