IN fact Oscar season is one of my favourite times of year, not just for the red carpet fashion but to see who impresses the critics.

Like the Barry Norman’s, Jonathan Ross’ (and irritating Claudia Winkleman’s) before me I appreciate Oscar worthy acting, a well thought out plot and stunning cinematography.

But unlike the critics I also appreciate films that are so ridiculously bad they are good.

My passion for rubbish “just for TV movies” was re-ignited this week following the social media splash surrounding Sharknado.

The title is pretty self explanatory, but for those of you who haven’t heard about the film, it is basically a low budget disaster movie involving sharks being dragged into a tornado and raining down on the unsuspecting citizens of LA – (based on a true story of course).

As if that plot wasn’t enough to entice you, the film has caused quite the tidal wave on Twitter leading to intrigued movie buffs all over the world checking it out.

And viewers might be forgiven for thinking the film makers had bitten off more than they could chew with this concept but the outlandish idea has proved to be a big hit.

So much so that the film is now being shown in a string of cinema’s due to popular demand.

And movie makers are already making plans for a sequel imaginatively named Sharknado 2: The Second One.

It all started when the trailer for the film became on instant internet hit.

But it was the host of celebrities who began wading in on Twitter that really captured people’s imagination.

Everyone from Mia Farrow to Olivia Wilde was raving about the B-movie.

The power of Twitter never ceases to amaze me and its ability in this case to catapult a TV film onto the silver screen.

I enjoyed classics such as Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus and Two Headed Shark Attack, so Sharknado was a no brainer for a shark enthusiast like myself .

It’s never going to take place of classics like Jaws and I’m sure we won’t be seeing anniversary editions of the film released in years to come but for now it’s a bit of fun.

I’m not saying these films will be winning any kind of awards anytime soon but there’s nothing better than a film that clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously and is ridiculously over the top.

IMDB (Internet Movie DataBase) may only think this latest shark’s tale is worthy of two stars but I for one think it deserves 10 and of 10 for effort.
