Tarantino Abruptly Abandons New Film

Just a little over a week after announcing the working title of his next western, Quentin Tarantino has shelved The Hateful Eight after learning that details of the script apparently leaked yesterday, Deadline reports. Tarantino additionally said he is now planning to put the script out in the form of a book, and will set meetings with publishers this week.

Tarantino asserted that he is abandoning the project because of his sense of “betrayal” from within the small circle of actors and producers that were granted access to the script and not because of the leak itself. “I do like the fact that everyone eventually posts [a screenplay], gets it and reviews it on the net,” Tarantino told Mike Fleming Jr. of Deadline. “Frankly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. I like the fact that people like my shit, and that they go out of their way to find it and read it. But I gave it to six motherfucking people!”

Which of those six people leaked the script, and the nature of the leak, largely remains a mystery, but Tarantino believes he has it rounded down to Bruce Dern or Michael Madsen, whom were personally handed copies of the script that the director suspects were then passed on to the actors’ agents and spread from there.

Perhaps Tarantino’s next film will now instead be a semi-autobiographical Kill Bill-offshoot in which a director must use every trick of grindhouse and B-movie special effects wizardry he knows to hunt down the traitor who leaked his script. Six Suspects anyone?
