Five Quick Questions with Jack Thomas Smith

Jack-Infliction - Publicity Photo #1

Jack Thomas Smith was born a writer, he was writing novels while most kids his age were still reading pop-up books. His passion for writing continued for many years.  In recent years, Jack set out to do what he always dreamed of and that was to make a movie.  That’s when he produced, wrote, and directed his debut film Disorder which went on to be released by Universal/Vivendi and New Light Entertainment. It also was released on PPV and VOD by Warner Brothers.  His latest film is the daunting horror film Infliction about two brothers that document their murder spree.

Five Quick Questions with Jack Thomas Smith

How did the concept for Infliction come about and can you tell us about any specific techniques or styles you incorporated to make Infliction a unique found footage film?
JACK: “Infliction” deals with the long-term effects of child abuse… And the empowerment of the victims over their abusers. I knew a person once, who came from a very abusive family. And I saw the cycle of abuse. Her parents were abused… And their parents had been abused by their parents… And when this person’s siblings started having children, they weren’t the best with their kids… I witnessed first-hand the damage that child abuse causes not only to the individual but to society as a whole. I don’t want to say that “Infliction” is a true story… But there are elements of truth to it. Honestly, I could probably say “Infliction” is based on a true story… All you have to do is turn on the news and you’ll see somewhere in the country the horrors that take place in “Infliction.”
“Infliction” is unique in the sense that it’s a character-driven and story-driven assembled footage film. The main characters aren’t being chased by monsters or ghosts and there aren’t over-the-top sound effects. It’s more of a psychodrama than a horror film. The footage was not shot accidently and “found” after the fact… The brothers document their actions for a specific reason… And the footage has been assembled to tell their story

It must have been horrific and disturbing as you were in the minds of two killers. Mentally how was it writing and making Infliction?
JACK: To be honest, it was tough. As I mentioned above, the screenplay was loosely based on people I once knew… So it was difficult going back there. The story is pretty brutal and it deals with a dark subject matter that affects too many people in this country. True life horror is far worse than any fictional horror story. The brothers are dealing with so much pain and internal struggle that it drives their violent journey. With “Infliction”, you’ll find yourself asking who are the true criminals and who are the true victims as the film unfolds.

Can you tell us about your production company Fox Tail Productions, Inc. and any services it provides?
JACK: Fox Trail Productions has served as the production company for “Disorder” and “Infliction”, which are the two features that I wrote, produced, and directed. It has also served as the production company for nearly a dozen videos that I have directed and produced along with a reality show sizzle reel, commercials, and corporate videos. My company owns camera gear, lighting equipment, and offers full post services along with a solid production team.

I have to ask about one amazing accomplishment you achieved at the age of eleven. You wrote a 300 page novel.  Can you take us back to that time and how the experience was being just eleven and accomplishing quite a writing feat?
JACK: – I look back at that and it was pretty crazy to write a novel at such a young age. I was inspired to write after reading “The Shining” by Stephen King when I was nine and I haven’t stopped writing since. The book that I wrote was called “The Incubus” and it was about a little boy, who had the power to destroy Hell. So Hell sent up minions to destroy this little boy while Heaven sent down guardians to watch over him. Essentially, a war raged on Earth between Heaven and Hell over this boy. The novel was never published. It was clearly written by someone between 9 to 12 years old… But I look back at the story and I think it’s pretty cool. Maybe someday I’ll base a screenplay on it…

With two highly regarded films out (Infliction and Disorder), what’s next for you and Fox Tail Productions?
JACK: I’m hoping to shoot my next feature next year. It’s an action/horror film called In The Dark. I’ve already written the screenplay and I’ll be directing it as well. I’m in the process of raising the financing. It takes place on a small island in Michigan that gets overrun by zombie/vampire creatures. There’s a handful of people left alive armed with guns and they have to fight hundreds of these things as they try to escape the island.
The zombie/vampire creatures are rotting and crazed… It’s not Twilight. Lol. When they attack, they tear their victims apart to feed on their blood. But In The Dark is more than that… The characters are strong… And there’s an underlying theme to the story that is consistent throughout with the protagonists and antagonists. There will be imagery in certain places in relation to the characters’ specific flaws. There’s a fine line between the heroes and villains. I can’t wait to shoot this film.
