Ghost House – Review

A young couple go on an adventurous vacation to Thailand and find themselves haunted by angry spirits after naively disrespecting a Ghost House.

Ghost House is an entertaining horror film that provides a fun story, likeable characters, terrifying creatures, and the settings provide some spectacular views, all those combined make the film worth watching. Directed by Rich Ragsdale and the story was created by Rich and his brother Kevin Ragsdale. The screenplay was written by Kevin O’Sullivan and Jason Chase Tyrrell and the film stars Scout Taylor-Comptom, James Landry Hebert, and Mark Boone Junior.

Rich and Kevin’s company KNR Productions teamed up with Thailand’s based Benetone Films to produce Ghost House.  Benetone is the number one production company in Thailand and they assisted Rich and Kevin through the local procedures required to film in Thailand and guided them through the land to scout the perfect locations. Kevin shares his experience working with Benetone and filming in Thailand, “Making a movie in Thailand was amazing. It was a real adventure for us. When shooting a low budget horror film (or any film for that matter), the conventional wisdom is to confine production to one or two locations. We ignored that and decided to fly halfway around the world and shoot all over Thailand, not only in and around Bangkok, but also up north in the remote jungle areas as well. It was a really ambitious endeavor, and we couldn’t have pulled it off without our Thai crew. They were very skilled, hard working and dedicated to the production. My production designer surprised me every day, and my Thai A.D. was the best I have ever worked with. We had a company move nearly every day, and as a result the shoot was taxing on everyone, but the crew really made it a joy. And of course, the food was fantastic.

Ghost House follows American tourists Jim (James Landry Hebert) and Julie (Scout Taylor-Compton) on their travels to Thailand.  Jim surprises Julie with a marriage proposal and their vacation now is extra special.  Jim is a good guy, but maybe reality hits him that he just proposed and soon will be with Julie and only Julie.  So, he blows off a little steam and calms his nerves by going to a gentlemans club.  The two then act like an old married couple and his debauchery actions has her out of spite making them to go with a couple British guys they just met, Robert (Russell Geoffrey Banks) and Billy (Rich Lee Gray) to visit some remote ghost houses.  Julie’s photography passion also is a motivator for her to visit the houses.

It’s apparent as they’re traveling to the houses that Robert and Billy are up to no good.  At one house they connive Julie into taking an idol as a keepsake for her special trip to Thailand. Robert and Billy then sneak off leaving Julie and Jim alone in the jungle.  Within moments, Julie is possessed by an evil spirit. It’s now all on Jim to figure things out to save his fiance.  He gets local help with Gogo (Michael S. New) a local guide to help him save Julie. From this point on the race to save Julie is packed with horror, action, and mystery that includes their so-called British friends Robert and Billy.  Saving Julie is dangerous and Jim is faced with moral dilemmas that raises the questions, what will he do and will he succeed?
